The Brookville Center for Children's Services at New Hyde Park

Our History

The Brookville Center for Children's Services (formerly the Marcus Avenue Early Childhood Developmental Program, Inc.) was established in 1975 and continues today to serve families and children with and without special needs through a variety of programs, services and intervention strategies. Affiliated with both AHRC Nassau and the North Shore-LIJ Health System, the Program offers Day Care services, Early Intervention, Special Education Preschool programs with both full and part-time schedules and is also a New York State approved evaluation site for both New York City and Nassau County. Our curriculum incorporates the New York State Learning Standards, and we employ the contemporary inclusion educational model in all aspects of the Program.

Our goal is to create a fun-filled, learning atmosphere through play and new experiences, so that the children enjoy themselves and other children. Activities such as language-based groups,  arts and crafts, computers, music and movement, sensory and structured/directed play, socialization and physical education, including gross and fine motor interactions are utilized to stimulate overall development.

The Brookville Center for Children's Services at the Barbara C. Wilson Preschool

Our History
The Barbara C. Wilson preschool has a long history of providing quality early childhood special education services.  Founded in 1973 by the renowned child neuropsychologist, Dr. Barbara C. Wilson as the North Shore University Hospital Preschool Development Program.  The school was one of the first on Long Island to provide center-based services specifically for children with communication disorders.  In 2006 the program was renamed in honor of Dr. Wilson and joined the Brookville Center for Children’s Services, Inc.

About the Program
Today the Barbara C. Wilson Preschool continues to provide quality early childhood education for children requiring special education services, as well as classroom opportunities for children not requiring special education. We serve children with a variety of developmental needs including children on the autism spectrum. The school offers a variety of full day class size options for center based special education.  In addition the school offers integrated classrooms which service classified and non-classified students in one classroom. The Barbara C. Wilson Preschool is an approved preschool evaluation site for preschool-aged children.

The program operates using a “team” approach.  Each classroom is staffed by a multidisciplinary team, which includes the teacher and assistants, speech/language pathologist, occupational therapist, physical therapist, psychologist and social work.  Teams meet weekly to review the children’s programming.  All members are aware of each other’s goals and objectives so that children benefit from a truly integrated learning environment.

Our unique philosophy uses a neuropsychological approach to understand children’s developmental issues and enhance treatment programming.  We also utilize a school wide positive behavior support system to promote positive behavior and social development of all children.   Parent participation in classroom observations, workshops and support groups offered by the school, is strongly encouraged.  In addition, an active and vibrant Parent Association provides fun activities for children and parents.

The Staff
Professional educators who are all Master’s certified in special education and/or early childhood education staff the program.  The staff is also comprised of speech language pathologists, many of whom are PROMPT certified, occupational therapists, physical therapists, psychologists and social workers. Each preschool class and integrated class is staffed with one Master certified teacher, two aides and a team member from each discipline.

Enrollment
Our integrated program is open to the children (3 to 5 years old) of staff and surrounding communities.    Children with special needs may be screened for enrollment once their home school district’s committee on special education has approved them for special education services. No one will be declined acceptance based upon race, creed, ethnic origin or religion.

The BCWP is committed to providing quality early education to all our students.
