Children's Education - OverviewThe Children's Education Center, AHRC Nassau, has been open since September 1968. Currently the school operates a 12-month education and therapeutic program for children with developmental delays and developmental disabilities. Ages range from 18 months to 21 years of age.
The school consists of five early childhood classrooms for children with and without developmental disabilities. The Early Childhood Program is a New York State Education Department approved program. Additional programmatic approvals from the Department of Health and the Department of Mental Health for the provision of educational and clinic services to children with developmental disabilities or developmental delays is in place.
In February 2002, the Early Childhood Program received Day Care licensing for 56 children, 18 months to 5 years of age. Fifteen classrooms are designated school age. Approximately 144 children (5 to 21 years of age) receive education services and clinic services in a high staff to student ratio. Class ratios are 12:1:4 (12 students, 1 master level special education teacher, and 4 aides); 10:1:3 (10 students, 1 master level special education teacher, 3 aides) Children referred to this program are children classified as mentally retarded, multiply disabled or traumatic brain injury. Children classified as Autistic receive intensive services, using the Applied Behavior Analysis Approach, are in a class of 6:1:3.5 (6 students, 1 master level special education teacher and 3.5 aides).
Services offered consist of psychology, speech pathology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, counseling, nursing, prevocational training, computer, arts and crafts, music and adaptive physical education.
