Helen Kaplan ICF ProgramThe Helen Kaplan Program opened in the summer of 1988. The program is proudly named after the first Executive Director of AHRC Nassau, Helen Kaplan. This program is classified as an intermediate care facility (ICF) and was established to provide services for individuals who have multiple physical and cognitive handicaps.
The Helen Kaplan Program is comprised of three homes located on six acres of land. The houses are identified by letter of the alphabet, House A, House B and House C. Each house contains two separate suites, which are joined by a common kitchen. Sixteen people live in each house with a total of forty-eight people living in these three homes.
The individuals who reside at the Helen Kaplan Program have special needs and are provided with extensive medical and clinical supports. Activities and services include recreation, physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, psychological, psychiatric, nutrition and habilitative services (activities of daily living).
Increased independence, inclusion, individualization and productivity are the goals for each individual who resides at the Helen Kaplan Program. Our primary goal and mission is to provide a true home for each individual while ensuring the health, safety and well being of every participant.
In an effort to better address the challenging needs of the individuals who currently reside in the Helen Kaplan Program, AHRC Nassau is preparing to open a new building, on the grounds in Plainview, to be home to those individuals with chronic medical conditions. The building's special features will enable individuals with chronic medical conditions to stay "at home" and diminish the amount of time they might otherwise have to spend at the hospital. The home, with 8 bedrooms, is designed for the medically frail individual and provides an even higher level of nursing support than that at the other three ICF buildings. For those individuals who are respiratory dependent, central oxygen is available in each room. Additionally, the residence complies with chapter 12 of the NFPA Fire Safety Code to include additional layers of sheetrock, both on the exterior and in the interior of the building, automatic door openers, an emergency generator, extra wide corridors to accommodate the equipment and the special needs of the individuals and a fire sprinkler system. All of these safety features are incorporated into the warm, home-like environment of the ICF.
