Residential Waiting List

AHRC serves more than 600 adults with developmental disabilities by providing them with community residences, supportive housing and intermediate care facilities.

Because of the growing need for housing, long waiting lists have become a reality. Currently, there are more than 1,800 individuals on Long Island awaiting residential services. In response to the problem, Governor Pataki announced the New York State Cares program in 2001 that would provide voluntary agencies with additional money to develop new residential programs to eliminate the waiting list and find housing for all who require it.

There is currently an AHRC residential wait list of more than 400 individuals. In order to be considered for placement in an AHRC group home, if and when vacancies become available, you must be on both the New York State Cares Wait List and the AHRC wait list.

The question often arises:  "How do I get my child's name on the NYS Cares Wait List"?  The following recommendations may help in the process:

1. Make the decision that residential placement is desirous for you and your child.

2. The individual should be at least 18 years of age (residential placement cannot be accommodated prior to age 21).

3. Contact AHRC to request a Residential Application.
