#bFair2DirectCare Toolkit for Family/Friends
Gov. Cuomo proposed a budget on Jan. 15 without #bFair2DirectCare dollars. During the budget’s 30-day amendment period, we must ask the governor to add #bFair2DirectCare to his proposal by letting him know our concerns via emails, telephone calls and social media.
While we were successful in 2017 in getting the Governor and Legislature to include $191 million in the enacted state budget to provide two consecutive 3.25% wage increases for DSPs, that is not enough to fully fund living wages for DSPs. On Long Island, we are competing for staff with New York City businesses and similar agencies who already offer the $15 minimum wage. At AHRC Nassau, 26% of staff commute from NYC and surrounding boroughs. With an average pay rate of $13.46 and a minimum wage of $12, there is concern that the challenge of retaining staff will become much worse.
Here’s how you can make a difference. Share your concerns with the governor by:
Email: Visit ahrc.convio.net/bfair to access a templated letter that can be updated and sent to the governor.
Telephone: Call the governor at 518.474.8390:
“My name is _________________. I’m a (parent, brother, etc.) and am calling because no allocation for #bFair2DirectCare was included in Gov. Cuomo’s recent budget proposal. I’m calling to ask that it be added during the 30-day budget amendment period. Share Your Personal Story. Thank you for your consideration.
