AHRC DSP Christopher CroneyChristopher Croney is a dedicated Direct Support Professional (DSP) who has been supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) at AHRC Nassau since 2021. His journey reflects his commitment to enhancing the lives of people with disabilities. His dedication is clear from the trust and comfort the people he supports have in him.

Christopher first joined AHRC in the 90s, leaving to pursue a career in aviation. When he returned to the agency in 2021, he recognized that while many things had changed, the most meaningful parts of the job remain.

Currently, he’s part of a team supporting five people in a residential setting. It’s a warm and welcoming home with caring staff members who provide exceptional care to support the residents’ well-being.

“These guys are more independent but they have more behavioral complexities,” said Christopher. He acknowledges the challenges and offers guidance with an approach grounded in empathy. “I speak to them like I would speak to anyone else. Communication is a big thing.”

His motivation is rooted in the small moments that speak to his core duties, “For the most part, it’s gratifying. If you’re looking to help people, this is a way for you to do that.”

For Christopher, being a DSP is a chance to contribute meaningfully to his community and benefit others. He speaks fondly of his most memorable experiences: accompanying the people he supports to dances and celebrations. “It’s their time and it’s all about them. It makes them feel good; I like to see them happy.”

Christopher embodies the spirit of AHRC’s mission to empower people to lead fulfilling lives with family, friends, and community. We’re grateful for his dedication and compassion for the people he supports. We are proud to celebrate him and his fellow DSPs this Direct Support Professional Recognition Week.
