Stand up beside Long Island officials, self-advocates, family members and friends at the Long Island #bfair2directcare rally to urge New York State’s legislators to accelerate the process of increasing wages for direct support professionals and other lower-paid staff in our programs.
Why Now? A few months ago, Governor Cuomo and the New York State legislature approved incremental wage increases for DSPs over a period of six years. While the legislators’ support is appreciated, this timeline is insufficient. Higher minimum wages are currently offered by other state-funded organizations providing services on behalf of the government and commercial businesses, at the same time the DSP staffing crisis on Long Island and throughout New York State continues to endanger the health, safety and well-being of the more than 130,000 people with disabilities.
What We’re Seeking. An accelerated timeline to compensate DSPs for their vital supports. We’re rallying for the last four increases of the six-year plan to be adjusted into three increases over two years through Jan. 1, 2020.
How You Can Get Involved. Call Governor Cuomo at (518) 474-8390, as well as your representative from the state assembly and senate. To find your local representatives, visit http://bit.ly/2ilwaWE. Also, raise your hand in support on social media by sharing AHRC Nassau’s on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or Instagram.
Thank You. We appreciate your participation in our community and your dedication to the issues that impact the lives of people with disabilities.
