Wheatley Farms and Arts Center

Where Tradition Meets Innovation

Nature, creativity and community are the heart of Wheatley Farms and Arts Center. Building on a person-centered philosophy, Wheatley Farms offers the highest-quality outdoors and arts program for all in the community to enjoy.

From gardening to music to movement, Wheatley Farms is part of AHRC Nassau’s Day Habilitation services. People with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), including autism, can connect with their passions while engaging the local community through recreational, social and volunteer opportunities.

Wheatley Farms will grow to become fully inclusive and available to people attending all AHRC Nassau Day Habilitation programs as well as the community at large. We seek to connect adults of all abilities through their shared interests in the arts and operation of a functioning farm.

While Wheatley Farms’ farmhouse is under construction, many offerings are available.

As a Day Hab Program Without Walls (PWW), the program at HorseAbility teaches people to engage* with and care for horses by grooming, feeding and watering, replacing hay and cleaning specialized equipment.

As part of the program, horticultural activities such as planting garlic and tulips, photography and other activities are also available.

A direct support professional and a person from the AHRC Nassau Day Hab harvests vegetables from their garden to donate to Island Harvest Farm Clubhouse Under Construction; Programs in Development
Construction has begun on our Brookville property. The doors of the clubhouse will open onto a patio overlooking equestrian rings and paddocks. People interested in the care of horses, goats, rabbits and other animals will have direct access to stables and pens.

Animal-assisted activities, animal husbandry and other opportunities will be offered by qualified experts and specially trained staff. The skills of grooming, feeding and exercising animals will be taught, as well as how to use and care for equestrian equipment and stables.

A fully-accessible gardening experience will be made available through raised beds, planters and trellises. Horticultural activities will include traditional farming and hydroponics for the growth, harvesting and distribution of an array of aromatic herbs and seasonal vegetables. Charitable grow-to-give initiatives will be implemented as well as educational opportunities focused on ecology, preservation and advocacy surrounding our shared responsibility in the care of our natural resources.
All activities are being designed to enhance self-esteem, promote stress reduction, foster language and communication, and create connections among community members. Special care will be given to developing adult, independent living skills.

Phase II (2020/2021)

Renovations will coincide with the development of programs, such as:

Country Kitchen: Cooking workshops will highlight the benefits of healthy food preparation and eating. When possible, these workshops will be based on the farms’ harvest. People will experience the direct benefits of planting and nurturing the same vegetables prepared in culinary workshops. Unused produce will be donated to the local community or shared as part of a local farmer’s market, pop ups and “grow-to-give” initiatives.

Artist Alcoves: The east wing of the farmhouse will offer space for artistic self-expression in small groups and classes. Workshops will be held with a variety of art mediums, including canvas painting, clay, photography and other opportunities in a supportive atmosphere of acceptance, encouragement and peer support.

Music: The beating of drums and other musical instruments will be heard throughout the west wing of the farmhouse. Musical instruction will be provided on vocals, instruments and rhythmic activity. A therapeutic approach will enhance sensory experiences and promote participation. Local experts will be invited to partner on a choral group, drumming and meditations circles, as well as other opportunities to share musical talent throughout the community.

Media and Performing Arts: Program participants will have the opportunity to develop their passions, talents and abilities in performance, videography, editing, set design, costume design, and production/tech assistance. Also, our media room will offer recording equipment for vocal, podcast, and film projects.

Motion: Movement activities will be held in the farmhouse’s east wing. Instructors will lead workshops promoting physical activity and wellness through dance and yoga. Community-based, clinical and other staff will assist with group exercises and promote participation to enhance balance and flexibility. A certified yoga instructor will offer instruction including calming breath techniques.

Relaxation and Meditation: Surrounded by a lush canopy of trees, mindful meditation in the Four Seasons Sunroom will develop the mind-body connection through proven practices. In the warmer months, an outdoor pool will be available and staffed with certified lifeguards.

Fellowship and Group Activities: The Great Room will provide a beautiful area to gather, socialize, share meals and offer various wellness and educational activities.
