On the evening of Thursday, July 10, people supported by AHRC Nassau strolled through the familiar glass doors of The Sterling at Bethpage for the Holly Jolly July Party.
This night of friendships and new connections welcomed 200 guests to celebrate the festive cheer of the holidays in the middle of summer.
Bringing together the best of both seasons, The Sterling’s walls were decorated with red and green tinsel as well as banners of tropical Santas in flip-flops.
As guests made their way to the ballroom, they were gifted Santa hats to complement their tropical shirts and dresses, LED foam glow sticks, and shutter glasses among other party favors. On the dance floor, DJ Carl Bartelli spun a vibrant mix of wintertime classics and contemporary hits.
“I had fun tonight,” said Timothy Schutt, who lives at the Pearl Street residence. Timothy added that he enjoyed the food and dancing to Katy Perry. “[My favorite was] ice cream!”
Included in the evening’s festivities was a full buffet featuring a grand display of appetizers, entrées, sides dishes, cakes, and desserts.
To make this amazing evening possible, event organizer Lynne Brewer, Community Relations Liaison, worked closely with Jerri Walker, Volunteer and Project Coordinator, and a dedicated group of volunteers and partners.
Many elements, from the delicate floral centerpieces on the guests’ tables to the cake and photobooths, were donated from local businesses.
Under the bright venue lights, people danced their hearts out and snapped photos in their souvenir leis and party hats. Toward the end of the event, Santa made a visit sharing candy and hugs with those eager to greet him.
The Holly Jolly July party was more than a fun event. It was proof positive of what can be accomplished when a community comes together to enrich the lives of people with disabilities.
