AHRC Nassau has been awarded $180,400 in grants from the Trustee Management Board of NYSARC Trust Services to strengthen its guardianship program, ensuring people with developmental disabilities in Nassau County have trusted advocates by their side—especially when they have few or no loved ones to help navigate life’s important decisions.
NYSARC Trust Services administers supplemental needs trusts and pooled trusts that can make a meaningful difference in people’s lives by allowing them to keep essential benefits, like Medicaid, while still having resources for needs that enhance their quality of life. In 2025, the organization awarded more than $1.68 million to The Arc New York Chapters statewide to support guardianship and related services.
At AHRC Nassau, guardianship services mean much more than managing paperwork or making medical decisions—they’re about ensuring each person’s rights, preferences, and dignity are respected. The grant helps fund the staff time, travel, training, and resources needed to stay connected with people, support their choices, and respond to both everyday needs and urgent situations.
Today, AHRC Nassau’s guardianship team supports 70 people—some over the age of 90—helping them remain active in their communities, maintain friendships, and receive the care they need.
“We are finding as the people we support are aging, we need to devote more time to ensure they are getting the best medical care given their needs,” said Eileen Stewart-Rooney, Guardianship Manager.
To meet the growing need, the team recently welcomed Maryann Fiorelli, whose role centers on responding to questions, concerns, and day-to-day needs. The three-person staff is also supported by a 10-member Guardianship Committee made up of volunteers, each with expertise and experience, who lend their skills to ensure each person receives thoughtful, individualized support.
“Our job is to figure out what is the least restrictive way to support the person,” Stephanie Hodelin, Guardianship Coordinator, shared. “It’s not just medical decisions— it’s everything about this person, and what matters most to them.”
With the support of staff and volunteers, AHRC Nassau’s guardianship program helps each person stay connected, make their own choices, and live the life they choose.
