On May 7, 2025, people supported by AHRC Day Services explored volunteer opportunities and new interests at the Day of Community Engagement, a volunteer and activities fair at Wheatley Farms and Arts Center spotlighting 17 organizations dedicated to giving back to Long Island. Many of the participating groups already enjoy strong connections with AHRC’s community and were eager to share more opportunities to get involved.
Among the organizations were Tender Loving Cats, which collaborates with Day Services on recycling projects, and the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter, whose representatives periodically visit Day Services locations with friendly dogs.
Held during Compass Validation Week, the event served as an extension of the Personal Outcome Measures (POMs) Rally, which took place the day prior. The rally focused on the theme of social roles, celebrating the many ways people contribute to their community, pursue their interests, and find meaning in holding different roles.
“Today’s goal is to increase people’s engagement with their community,” said Jerri Walker, Volunteer and Project Coordinator. “By taking on more social roles, people can expand their social circle, discover new passions, and positively impact others.”
Kristen Watson, who receives Day Services in Oceanside, visited the fair with a group from her site and Direct Support Professional Michael Shand. Both Kristen and Michael enjoyed their time at the fair. Michael, who has been with the agency for just a few months, likes helping people explore their community.
Kristen was particularly interested in Long Island Kindness Rocks, a positivity initiative that offered attendees the chance to decorate a rock and leave their mark by the meditation garden.
“I signed up for rock art, bowling, and dancing with AHRC,” said Kristen. Bowling and dancing events are organized by Lynne Brewer, Community Relations Liaison and facilitated by community volunteers.
For people supported by AHRC Day Services, volunteering and exploring new activities aren’t just opportunities to give back—they’re pathways to connection, growth, and empowerment.
