This training provides families with a clear, empowering understanding of employment services available to people with Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities (I/DD). Participants will explore the full spectrum of employment options—from discovery and vocational assessments to job development, coaching, and long-term supports. The session explains how employment services work, the role families play in shaping outcomes, and how to collaborate effectively with providers. Through practical examples, real-world success stories, and actionable tools, families will gain the knowledge and confidence needed to advocate for meaningful, person-centered employment opportunities. Employment is not just about earning a paycheck—it is a pathway to independence, dignity, purpose, and community inclusion.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify how to determine whether employment services are the right fit for their family member, including understanding eligibility, assessing readiness and interest, and learning the steps to enroll in employment supports.
  • Describe the purpose and structure of employment services for people with I/DD, including discovery, career planning, job development, and job coaching.
  • Understand the rights, responsibilities, and expectations within employment services, including person-centered planning, informed choice, and how services are monitored for quality and progress.
  • Explain the essential role families play in supporting employment success, including fostering expectations, sharing insights, and collaborating with providers.
