Volunteers Donate to Hicksville Emergency Services and Organizations

AHRC Nassau’s One Stop Gift Shop recently donated $250 to the Long Island Crisis Center, a nonprofit providing 24/7 confidential and non-judgmental programs and services. This is the third donation the shop has made so far this year, including their donation to the Hicksville Fire Department for $50 and the Long Island Coalition Against Bullying for $250 for a total of $550.

Shop organizers and staff chose them to support services and organizations in Hicksville where the shop is located. The shops’ proceeds are used to maintain the inventory and donated to local charitable organizations whose activities help strengthen the fabric of the Long Island community.

The One Stop Gift Shop is a volunteer-run boutique with an online store and brick-and-mortar shop operated by AHRC Nassau at 113 Levittown Parkway in Hicksville, Monday–Friday, 10 a.m.–1:30 p.m. Questions? Please contact (516) 605-1743 or onestop@ahrc.org

The store supports people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to develop social and vocational skills to serve them in life and possibly in future employment.

“We hope that by donating the proceeds to local charities and organizations, it will educate people in our community to see things from another person’s perspective and teach them to react with kindness toward someone who may be different from them,” said Brooke Gillman, Assistant Director of Day Services.

The gift shop sells handmade items as well as themed apparel. They decorate the shop for the holidays and always have seasonal items for sale including items crafted by people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

People attending AHRC Nassau Day Services have the opportunity to volunteer at the gift shop for a three-to-four month period. Volunteers do everything from keeping the store tidy to helping pick out and restock inventory.
