Cathy Hawkins gives Jeffrey Jean-Pierre his NYSID Outstanding Performance Award

Congratulations to Jeffrey Jean-Pierre for receiving the 2025 Outstanding Performance Award from New York State Industries for the Disabled (NYSID).

Jeffrey was recognized among 45 people employed through NYSID who were nominated for the prize. He was honored for his exemplary work ethic, initiative, and commitment to doing his job well.

Jeffrey took the role of Porter at the New York State (NYS) Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in October 2023 and has been a valued member of the team ever since. He is known by his coworkers for being positive and always willing to lend a helping hand.

“I’m happy,” Jeffrey shared when asked how he felt receiving the award. “I like this job a lot.”

Jeffrey brings several years of experience working as a porter and worked in retail prior to joining the DMV. He enjoys his work environment, schedule, and pay.

On January 15, Jeffrey was recognized at his workplace and celebrated by his co-workers and Cathy Hawkins, Employment Training Specialist (ETS), AHRC Nassau.

Cathy has been the main point of contact for Jeffrey at work since he began employment at the DMV. Cathy has been there to assist him in training and establishing a routine. She served as a go-between for DMV employees who may have additional questions on how to assist Jeffrey at work.

Five days a week, Jeffrey works the 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. shift at the DMV. Now, he works independently, with support, t, with Cathy stopping by to offer periodic support a few times a month. While still independent, Jeffrey knows he can count on Janet O’Kane and Alex Fields, who are friendly coworkers and natural supports.

Jeffrey Jean-Pierre and his team“Natural supports are the people in your environment that you work with. They are people you can go to if you have a question. For example, if you’re at home, your family are your natural supports,” Cathy said. “Here, if Jeffrey has a problem at work, they are always there for him. They help him reset his password or they call me if he needs extra help.”

Along with a certificate of recognition, Jeffrey was highlighted in the annual NYSID commemorative yearbook, received a monetary award, and was presented AHRC Nassau keepsakes and a tray of Wheatley Farms cookies to share with coworkers.

NYSID is one of three organizations designated as a NYS Office of General Services Preferred Source. As a NYSID partner, people receiving Supported Employment Services have access to NYS positions filled through NYSID. This partnership gives people with disabilities, like Jeffrey, access to gainful employment  with competitive compensation, regular pay increases, benefits, and a potential for favorable retirement options.

This opportunity not only lets Jeffrey shine at a job he enjoys, but also supports his independence and ongoing professional development. Congratulations again to Jeffrey on his many successes now and to come!
