High school sophomore Isha Dua has become a familiar, friendly face at AHRC Nassau’s recreation events—whether she’s handing out snacks at Saturday bowling or setting up decorations on a Thursday night.
Since beginning her volunteer work with the agency in February, Isha has become a trusted source of support. She might be found cleaning up a spill, assisting the event lead, or asking an attendee about their day.
Isha’s volunteering supports people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to participate in recreational activities. These activities are important outlets for people to express themselves, connect with others, and simply have fun.
“I love the dances the most because I get to interact more,” said Isha. “We have conversations, dance together and one time, somebody gave me a drawing of Stitch. I really love it.”
Isha treasures her drawing of a main character from the popular show and movie, “Lilo and Stitch,” because it’s a reminder of the appreciation and friendship she’s found through volunteering.
Isha believes so strongly in her volunteering that she invited a friend to join her at a recent event. Her busy schedule not only includes volunteering at AHRC Nassau, but also with Long Island Cares and her local library.
Her advice to anyone considering volunteering with the agency is to show up with an open mind and a willingness to learn.
“It’s really enjoyable,” Isha said. “I look forward to continuing.”
Get Involved
AHRC Nassau hosts recreational events throughout the year, including Saturday bowling and Thursday night dances. Volunteers make these events possible and support dozens of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) to catch up with friends, compete with one another, win prizes, and have a good time in the community.
There are opportunities to volunteer agencywide. Visit www.ahrc.org/volunteer to learn how to get involved.
