Constantine Vasiliou joined AHRC Nassau as a Direct Support Professional (DSP) in November 2024, a significant shift from his previous career as a mechanic.
Driven by a $1,000 sign-on bonus and a desire for a change, Constantine found something far more valuable than a paycheck.
“Even outside of work, this job really changed my whole dynamic and outlook on life,” he reflects.
His 60-hour work week as a DSP has not only provided financial stability but a profound sense of fulfillment.
Constantine’s role at AHRC has exposed him to a world he never knew existed.
“I’ve never known there were so many parks and places to visit. I never went to beaches growing up. I really got to discover Long Island,” he shares, highlighting the opportunities for exploration in his work.
He credits Michael Mangos and Emily Storz, both supported with Day Services, for their recommendations of popular lunch spots and restaurants.
He takes great pride in the support he provides and the trust of the people he’s developed.
“When they come to me every time they need something, that’s like my medal of honor,” said Constantine. “That means a lot to me.”
While acknowledging the financial considerations, Constantine emphasizes the true reward of his work. “Sometimes I think, I can go to McDonald’s and make X amount of money, but this job has taught me that there’s more to life than money. I’m sitting here thinking how can I move up and develop myself more into this field.”
He embodies AHRC’s mission by dedicating himself to improving the lives of others. “I’m trying to educate people and help people as much as I can.”
Beyond his work, Constantine enjoys attending New York Mets games and exploring the city with friends.
Join us in celebrating Constantine and all our dedicated DSPs during this recognition week!
