During a wonderful evening of commemoration and community empowerment, CEO Stanfort J. Perry was honored alongside three impactful Black leaders for contributions made throughout their lives and careers. The Black History Month Dome Lighting Ceremony kick-off event took place on February 5, at the Theodore Roosevelt Executive & Legislative Building, celebrating this year’s theme, “Telling the Story of How We Overcome.”
Stanfort was highlighted for demonstrating excellence throughout his 35 years of leadership and in his current role leading AHRC Nassau and affiliate agencies.
As an advocate for the success and inclusion of people with disabilities, Stanfort shared gratitude for the award. He also underscored how the current disability rights movement is deeply rooted in the civil rights movement that fought against racial segregation and discrimination in the U.S.
“I’m honored to accept this award on behalf of all the people that we support; people who continue to fight to be included for the same opportunities that you and I enjoy on the day-to-day basis,” said Stanfort. “The Americans with Disabilities Act and all the other movements you see to integrate and include people with disabilities started with the advocacy that we saw in the 1960s.”
Lighting the Dome
This was the fourth time the dome of the executive building was lit to honor the legacy and success of Black people in Nassau County, with support from Nassau County Executive Bruce A. Blakeman, local legislators, and community leaders. Deputy County Executive Anissa Moore led the event with the Executive Director of the Office of Minority Affairs, Lionel Chitty, and his staff. Uplifting music by the Black Voices of Nassau County delighted attendees throughout the evening.
“Tonight, we will light the dome in celebration and recognition of the many Black Americans who call Nassau County home,” said Anissa prior to presenting a video message from County Executive Blakeman.
“As we enter February, I want to take a moment to recognize and celebrate an important time of year, Black History Month,” Mr. Blakeman said. “This month serves as a reminder of the countless contributions and sacrifices made by African Americans throughout our nation’s history.”
Congratulations to Stanfort and thank you to the people supported across AHRC Nassau and its affiliated agencies, their families and staff members who proudly joined in celebrating this honor and achievement.
