Staff members and residents at Washington Street pose in matching shirts worn at their annual summer barbecue. The aroma of jerk chicken and sizzling hot dogs filled the air at the Washington Street home as residents, staff, and families gathered for their annual summer barbecue – a vibrant celebration of community and connection.

This year’s event, a potluck feast featuring a delightful mix of Caribbean and American cuisine, brought together residents from seven homes: Hicks Place, Elizabeth Street, Pine Street, Wolf Avenue, Saddle Rock Road, Seaford Avenue, and Lakeview Avenue.

The event itself was a culmination of teamwork and dedication. Jude Saint Vilus, House Manager and a principal organizer since 2009, expertly orchestrated the barbecue for 50 guests. She wasn’t alone; staff from all participating residences contributed to the potluck, and even though families were told they didn’t need to bring anything, many arrived with delicious desserts. One resident’s mother insisted on sharing her homemade mac and cheese!

Everyone had the opportunity to contribute to the event.  When asked about his participation, Alan Macklin shared how he “helped take the stuff outside,” and “helped them clean the tables as well, like wiping them down and everything.” Alan thoroughly enjoyed the day, sharing stories and finalizing Labor Day weekend plans with his dad.

It makes me feel like, yes, we did it!”

Family meetings are a cornerstone of AHRC Nassau, strengthening the bond between staff and families. At Washington Street, these quarterly meetings have evolved into engaging social gatherings,  reflecting the spirit of community.

“The quarterly family meetings have been replaced with the opportunity to have a barbecue or party over a meal,” explains Shaun Weathers, Vice President. “It’s definitely a shift in the culture. We’re happy about it because we want people to build these relationships and connections with not only their own families but with the other houses.”

These gatherings, Shaun emphasizes, create an environment of mutual support, allowing residents and staff to connect, learn from one another, and celebrate the vibrant community they’ve built.
