As the new Director of the Thomas S. Gulotta Wheatley Farms & Arts Center, Jerri Walker is advancing a vision grounded in inclusion, connection and opportunity, creating a space where children and adults can learn, explore and belong. Nestled on over two acres adjacent to AHRC Nassau’s Brookville campus, the Center features stables and paddocks, a clubhouse, and outdoor gardens. The setting is designed to support movement, learning, and productive activities in a natural environment.
Under Jerri’s leadership, the Center will bring together people with and without disabilities through educational programs, wellness activities, and service projects that positively impact the local community. “The Center was founded on the idea that time in nature and shared experiences can create meaningful connection,” said Jerri. “What excites me is bringing that to life through real programming, from horticulture and the arts to community projects, where people are engaged in what interests them and we all share in the outcomes.”
Jerri will oversee both programming and operations, guiding a range of offerings from horticultural to arts-based programs to community events – while ensuring the property is welcoming to all.
To expand the Center’s reach, Jerri is focused on strengthening partnerships with community groups, faith-based organizations, civic groups, and longtime agency partners such as Purolator and the Giving Tree Family.
She also plans to launch a youth leadership board to engage young adults in shaping future programming and identifying new opportunities for involvement. “In my previous role as Volunteer Coordinator, I was continually inspired by the dedication and creativity of the young adults contributing their time,” said Jerri. “I look forward to elevating their voices and incorporating their ideas into program development, while creating new opportunities.”
Formally educated in Special Education, Jerri began her career at AHRC Nassau as a Direct Support Professional (DSP) over two decades ago. She also served as Assistant Director of Camp Loyaltown for 6 years and was responsible for programming. Her professional experience continues to inform her leadership today, shaping a Center rooted in inclusion, access, and community. To get involved at the Center, sign up at www.ahrc.org/volunteer
